Plain Text Midnight Commander VFS Credentials

Midnight Commander can persist VFS passwords in its profile, including FTP settings and hotlist entries containing remote URLs. Our isotope stores the MC profile files in the macOS keychain and exposes them through a temporary MC_PROFILE_ROOT only while `mc` runs.

Local README excerpt

midnight-commander

Midnight Commander can store VFS credentials in its user profile, including FTP settings in ini and remote locations with embedded passwords in hotlist.

This radioisotope migrates the relevant MC profile files to the keychain and wraps mc so those files are recreated under a temporary MC_PROFILE_ROOT while Midnight Commander runs.

Caveats

  • Only the default XDG Midnight Commander profile files are migrated.
  • Runtime changes to the migrated files are not persisted back to keychain.
  • Direct execution of the original binary will not receive credentials.
