Project history
libxcvt was split out of Xorg server code in 2021. Olivier Fourdan's 2021-03-26 X.Org development RFC explained that the CVT modeline generator existed inside the Xorg server, was also used by the cvt utility, and had been copied into Xwayland; the proposed library removed that duplication and made the generator available as a standalone project.
The first release announcement, libxcvt 0.1.0 in July 2021, described it as the VESA CVT standard timing modelines generator extracted from the Xserver. Later X.Org announcements describe both the library and a standalone cvt tool copied from the Xorg implementation as a direct replacement for the version formerly provided by the Xorg server.
