Istio was announced in 2017 after Google, IBM, and Lyft joined forces around a service-mesh model built on Envoy. The 0.1.0 GitHub release appeared on 2017-05-10, and the announcement framed Istio as a way to inject proxy infrastructure into microservice traffic paths while giving operators fleet-wide visibility, policy, and security.

The 1.0.0 release was published on 2018-07-31. That milestone moved Istio from rapid pre-1.0 iteration into a platform that enterprises could evaluate for production service-to-service traffic, especially in Kubernetes and hybrid environments.

istioctl grew with the project as the compact tool for installing, validating, inspecting, and operating the mesh. The official download documentation states that each Istio release archive includes the istioctl binary, installation profiles, Helm charts, and samples, which is why package managers often expose the CLI separately from full cluster deployment machinery.

In 2022 Istio applied to join the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, and in 2023 the Istio project announced CNCF graduation. The graduation post highlights six years of project work, vendor support, broad company contribution, and the continued evolution of sidecar and ambient mesh deployment models.
