## Project history and usage

InfluxDB CLI is the separately packaged influx command for managing InfluxDB v2 resources. It handles setup, config profiles, organizations, buckets, authorizations, tasks, templates, backups, restores, writes, queries, and related administrative workflows.

### Project history

InfluxDB v2 originally shipped the influx CLI alongside the server. InfluxData release notes announced that beginning with InfluxDB 2.1 the CLI would no longer be packaged with the server release, and future CLI versions would come from the influxdata/influx-cli repository.

The influx-cli README explains the split plainly: decoupling made it easier to track InfluxDB Cloud API changes, ship CLI-only fixes faster, and build releases for more platforms than the server could support. That turned influx from a server-adjacent binary into a separately versioned package.

### Adoption history

The CLI remained central to InfluxDB v2 operations after the split because the docs use it for setup, writing data, querying data, profile management, and automation. The input metadata shows a dedicated Homebrew formula and winget package, separate from the InfluxDB server package.

### How it is used

Users run influx setup to initialize a v2 instance, manage config profiles stored under ~/.influxdbv2/configs, create buckets and organizations, manage auth tokens, write line protocol, run Flux queries, and automate backup or restore operations. The separate package is especially useful on admin workstations that need to control remote InfluxDB servers without installing the server.

### Why package nerds care

influxdb-cli is a neat packaging case study: a CLI split out of a database server because cloud APIs, platform support, and release cadence needed a smaller artifact. Package managers expose that boundary directly by shipping influxdb-cli apart from influxdb.

### Timeline

- 2020: InfluxDB 2.0 GA shipped with v2 API, Flux, setup, backup, and restore CLI workflows.
- 2021: InfluxDB 2.1 packaging notes announced the CLI/server split.
- 2021: influx CLI v2.1.0 documented as the first release from influxdata/influx-cli.
- 2026: influx CLI v2.8.0 release notes documented continued standalone maintenance.

### Related projects

- InfluxDB v2 is the server line this CLI manages. InfluxDB Cloud drove part of the decoupling rationale. Flux, InfluxQL compatibility, OpenAPI-generated clients, and the InfluxData downloads portal are closely related to the CLI's workflows and distribution.
