LLVM 17 is a later release of the LLVM umbrella project, which the official homepage describes as modular and reusable compiler and toolchain technologies. The versioned Homebrew formula preserves that release line after the unversioned llvm package advances.
LLVM 17 is a key endpoint in the opaque-pointer migration documented by LLVM. The official opaque-pointer guide says LLVM 17 supports only opaque pointers and no longer supports typed pointers, following the staged transition through LLVM 14, 15, and 16.
